Barcelona said in a statement released Wednesday that it is “studying the legal measures that need to be taken” after El Mundo leaked details of contract negotiations that took place between the club and superstar forward Lionel Messi in 2020, per ESPN’s Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens.

The full statement read:

“In relation to the information published in El Mundo under the title ‘Barca Leaks, the club’s secret files’, Barcelona express indignation at the intentional leaking of information that is part of a legal process.

“The club regrets that the media in question boasts of having ‘access to a huge number of documents and emails that are part of the Barcagate investigation’ when this information is yet to be shared.

“In any case, the article in question makes public documents that have nothing to do with the ongoing case and their use is an affront to the reputation and confidentiality of the club. For that reason, and with the aim of protecting Barcelona’s rights, the club’s legal department are studying the legal measures that need to be taken.”

Per El Mundo‘s report, Messi wanted to reduce his buyout clause to just €10,000 ($9,849), wanted guarantees the club would pay him his deferred wages, desired a three-year deal that included a €10 million signing bonus and a player option for a fourth season in 2024 and other considerations, including private boxes for both his and Luis Suarez’s family at Camp Nou.

Messi reportedly would have taken a 20 percent pay cut on his €70 million annual salary but wanted to be paid back that sum with interest in the future.

He ultimately signed with Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2021. Despite agreeing to terms with new club president Joan Laporta, Barcelona’s financial woes made them unable to register the agreement with La Liga.

El Mundo became privy to Messi’s previous contract requests in negotiations with Barcelona after reportedly obtaining emails that police had gathered during an investigation into the club. Messi himself is not being investigated.

Per ESPN’s report, “Barcagate is an ongoing legal case relating to third-party payments, breaching internal protocols and smear campaigns against club legends involving the previous president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board of directors.”

Scholes tips Mbappe to be world’s best ahead of Haaland

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes is tipping Kylian Mbappe to become the best player in world soccer.

Lionel Messi, 35, and Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, have contested a running battle for that title for over a decade, winning 12 of the last 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them.

The era of the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly may soon be over as both players are now past their peak.

Many fans are anticipating a new battle to emerge between France forward Mbappe, 23, and Norway striker Erling Haaland, 22.

Haaland has scored 14 goals in 10 appearances for Manchester City since signing from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Over the course of his career, Haaland has a better goals-per-game ratio than Mbappe, but Scholes believes that the 2018 World Cup winner is a more complete player.

Speaking to former teammate Gary Neville on The Overlap, Scholes said: “I’d go Mbappe. I think there’s more to his game [than Haaland’s]. He’s not just an out-and-out center-forward, is he?”

Scholes added: “He [Mbappe] can go wide, he can dribble past people, he’s quick, he can play one-twos.

“Haaland’s f****** amazing, don’t get me wrong, but he is [just] a goalscorer, isn’t he?”

Scholes was nominated for the Ballon d’Or award five times during his playing career – in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 – but never received a single point in the final voting.

‘Similar To Xavi’ | Lionel Messi Has High Praise For New Liverpool Signing

Liverpool confirmed the loan signing of Arthur Melo on a season-long loan from Juventus, with an option to buy at the end of his time at Anfield.

Arthur Melo

Arthur Melo has played on the highest level of international club football since he made a £27.9million transfer from Gremio to Barcelona in the 2018 summer transfer window.

He played at Barcelona for two years before making a whopping £68.4million move to Juventus in the summer of 2020. He’s now made his way to Liverpool on a season-long loan after Jurgen Klopp’s side have been killed with injuries in midfield.

Liverpool confirmed the loan deal at 10pm, exactly one hour before the transfer window closes. With injuries to Thiago, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and now Jordan Henderson, it is possible that Arthur Melo will make his debut for Liverpool at the weekend in the Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park.

The Brazilian midfielder has had the luxury of doing something not many players can say they have done; play with both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s the former who had high praise for Arthur Melo back in 2018:

“Arthur, I didn’t know that much about but he seems similar to Xavi. He’s very safe and trustworthy. He has the La Masia style.

“Playing short passes, without losing the ball, and he grasped it quickly, the dynamic of the team.”

Arthur left Barcelona in 2020, after just two years at the Catalan club. He left for a move to Juventus. This was all his own decision after it was believed that Juventus promised him assurances over the playing time at the club and his wages would be tripled.

Liverpool released a video with a message from the new no.29 on Twitter late night on Thursday after the transfer window officially closed.

Messi left off Ballon d’Or list for 1st time since ’05

Lionel Messi has been left off the 30-man list of Ballon d’Or nominees for the first time since 2005 after the contenders were announced by France Football on Friday.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema leads the nominees as he bids to win the first Ballon d’Or award of his career. Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland were also included in the list of this year’s nominees.

There was no place, either, for Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain teammate Neymar.

Three United States women’s national team players feature among the 20 nominees for the Women’s Ballon d’Or — Catarina Macario, Alex Morgan and Trinity Rodman.

Last year’s winner, Alexia Putellas, is one of five Barcelona players on the list despite suffering a serious knee injury on the eve of this summer’s European Championships. There are also spots for three players who helped England to Euros glory, Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze and Beth Mead.

The big surprise, though, came in the men’s nominees where Messi’s run of 15 consecutive nominations, featuring seven wins, came to an end after a disappointing first season at PSG following his shock move from Barcelona last year. The 35-year-old scored just 11 goals in all competitions last season.

France international Benzema has enjoyed a sensational year after playing an influential role in helping Madrid win the LaLiga and Champions League double last season.

The 34-year-old finished the 2021-22 campaign as LaLiga top scorer with 27 goals while he scored in every Champions League knockout round, and just missed out on scoring in the final after seeing a goal disallowed.

He also picked up silverware on the international stage after helping France clinch the UEFA Nations League in October with a goal in the 2-1 victory over Spain.

The striker is the favourite to pick up the Ballon d’Or after the award decided to undergo radical changes this year.

Messi’s 2021 selection over Lewandowski was a controversial pick in the eyes of the football world, and France Football later announced that the award period will fall in line with the main European season rather than entire calendar year.

Liverpool‘s Mohamed Salah has also been nominated for the award after a stellar campaign. The forward shared the Premier League Golden Boot with fellow Ballon d’Or nominee Tottenham Hotspur‘s Son Heung-Min and was named the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year. He also took the top honour from the Football Writers’ Association.

The list of women’s nominees also features five players who helped Lyon defeat Barcelona to win the Champions League last season. As well as Macario, there is recognition for Selma Bacha, Christiane Endler, Aga Hegerberg and Wendie Renard.

Germany leads the way with three nominees for the Kopa Trophy, which celebrates the best men’s players under the age of 21. Borussia Dortmund‘s Karim Adeyemi, Bayern Munich‘s Jamal Musiala and Bayer Leverkusen‘s Florian Wirtz all make the list, as does England duo Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka as well as Real Madrid‘s Champions League winner Eduardo Camavinga and Barcelona wonderkid Gavi.

Real Madrid’s Champions League final hero Thibaut Courtois leads the nominees for the Yachine Trophy given to the best goalkeeper.
